Some Information On Containment Berms

By Tracie Knight

This century and the last have seen a lot of ecological disasters due to spills of oil or chemicals either at sea or on land. In response to this, people have responded by finding or inventing many ways by which to avert large scale ecological disasters. The introduction of spill containment berms to the fight against industrial pollution has been quite effective in most applications.

Though many may tout berms as something modern, they were in fact being used as far as medieval times. It has been researched that ancient American Indians used berms to assist in irrigation and channeling of water and waste on their farms. Likewise medieval engineers used them to stave off waste materials and foreign agents from entering construction areas.

Depending on the spill there will be different reactions as regards how fast or slow it flows or how slow or fast it is absorbed into the ground. How toxic and dangerous it is will also matter. In any case, this means that there will be specialized berms for different kinds of spills and such.

Most of the time, the regular kinds of equipment for containment are just square or rectangular sheets of nonporous materials with embanked sides to keep spills within. Some say that they even look like little pools for children. They are usually used for flat surface areas near roads, and are commonly used along discharge operations of tanker trucks to keep spillage to a minimum. They are also quite durable and resilient as befits their use.

The resiliency of the walls, or the way they are able to keep their shape, or bounce back to their original shape and size after they have been put under pressure is very important. This is very important when these systems are used for roadside applications and will experience tires crossing over it on regular intervals.

Although the rectangular and square designs are common, these are not the only shapes. They can come in many customizable shapes depending on the need. This is because many different kinds of surfaces, many being rough and having different kinds of absorptive capacities. Many of these berms can be customized to adjust to differing roughness and angles of the land through the use of customizable connectors and differing matting and flooring.

Berm systems nowadays are also bio degradable so they are very easy to dispose of when on finishes using them. But this does not lessen their strength in any way. They can withstand the roughest and sharpest of surfaces and still retain their integrity by not being punctured or torn. Thus one can be sure that the materials now used are always the best for the specific spill they are meant to control.

Should you want to buy these systems they are not hard to look for. If you are connected to the internet it is best to use the keywords spill containment and spill management systems to make the search easier. You can also do this if searching manually through Yellow Pages and local ad papers if needed.
